Message From the Chair of the Board of Directors

During my tenure with Intercultural Family Services, Inc., the uniqueness of this dynamic organization has continually impressed me. As board chair, I have had an opportunity to observe firsthand our staff's devotion to serving the ever-present social issues that confront most of our multicultural clients.

IFSI has specialized in providing the core skills necessary for true cultural competency, serving first- and second-generation immigrants. The population that we serve is impoverished, challenged by language and cultural barriers, has few options for a quality education and jobs, and suffers disproportionately from mental illness and substance abuse.

We're trying to change that. Now, we're considering expanded programs for families and troubled youth, to engage a multi-generational approach and to envision new ways to service our clients.

As in the past, careful planning both for programs and finances will be the watchword. However, our commitment to the population we serve, and the multiple talents of our staff, who speak 26 languages, can no longer be understated.

In this first annual report we have highlighted the growth and positive change that are hallmarks of IFSI, as well as its programs. We have outgrown our current facilities located on both sides of the 4200 block of Chestnut Street. In the coming months, you will be hearing more about IFSI, its programs and direction for the future, to help us serve the expanding number of clients in different ways.

The horrific events of September 11 of last year affected each and every American profoundly. While we are shocked and saddened at this unprecedented assault on our country, we recognize this is a time, more than ever, to reach out to all those who need help. We hope when you hear from us, you will provide guidance and support for our mission. Financial support to meet our goals is critical, and we sincerely hope you will respond in a positive and generous manner.
