Celebrating Diversity at IFSI

 

JULY 2000

Philippine Fiesta Celebration – Staff and guests were treated to a colorful showcase of music, history, art, fashion, and the intricate timing and execution of the Tinikling, a Philippine dance.   An Asian meal of Chicken Pork Adobo, Lumpia (spring rolls), and Puto (steamed white rice flavored with cream and honey) was served.

 

AUGUST 2000

Africa – The Cradle of Civilization.   Proverbs and poems, musical and dance selections, a traditional installation ceremony for newlyweds, and a vibrant display of traditional ensembles were shown during a historical journey exploring African nations. Various types of cuisine were served--from the hot and spicy dishes of the east (Ethiopia)--to the robust and flavorful entrees of the west (Nigeria).

 

SEPTEMBER 2000

Caribbean Festival – Everyone enjoyed a videotape showing the beautiful beaches, throbbing beat of steel drums, and inviting smiles of Caribbean natives from Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Puerto Rico, and Antigua.  After the presentation, a menu of jerk chicken, fried plantains, and peas and rice capped off the festival.

 

OCTOBER 2000

El Dia De La Raza Nueva The Day of the New Race

Bicultural/biracial issues in America were explored. IFSI Core Values concerning Respect and Quality of Services to biracial/cultural clients highlighted the program.  The audience learned about issues facing mixed-race individuals as they ate multi-ethnic cuisine.

 

NOVEMBER 2000

Thanksgiving Potluck – An annual tradition shared by staff members, donors, board members, and the community.  More than 100 dishes, including appetizers, entrees and desserts from 25 different countries were sampled.

 

DECEMBER 2000

Annual Holiday Celebration Dinner – Employees gathered for dining and dancing at this semi-formal event.  IFSI board members, supporters and friends also enjoyed the festivities and an ethnic buffet.  An important part of this holiday dinner is the Staff Service Awards ceremony that recognizes employees who have worked five years at the agency.

 

JANUARY 2001

Chinese and Vietnamese New Year – The year of the Snake is celebrated.  Participants learn how to master the art of using chopsticks, hear Confucius’ philosophies on life, or dance the Vu Trong Com (traditional Vietnamese dance).  Afterwards, a scrumptious buffet of lo mein, steamed dumplings, and Szechuan chicken and rice was sampled.

 

FEBRUARY 2001

Black History Month Celebration – This program commemorated the accomplishments of African-Americans throughout history.  Featured are a choir singing spirituals, a re-enactment of the lives of Sojourner Truth and Madame C. J. Walker; the Doo Wap singers and Motown explosion, as well as segments on notable athletes, businesspersons, and artists.

 

MARCH 2001

Brits and Blarneys – A hilarious Shakespeare-influenced play highlighting the cultural similarities and differences among the British, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh.  Featured were Ode to William Wallace of Scotland, History of the British Coat of Arms, and steamy tidbits on the royals. Menu selections included corned beef and cabbage, Shepherd’s Pie, and Welsh rarebit.

 

APRIL 2001

Cambodian New Year – The audience participated in a traditional Khmer service hosted by a Cambodian Monk. Celebrants danced the Rorm Kbach. Delicious Cambodian dishes, such as curry stew, sour soup and panana with tapioca were then served.

 

MAY 2001

El 5 de Mayo – Latin culture is explored in a fun and entertaining explosion of dance (Merengue and Salsa), acoustic guitar selections and a staged bull fight with a Matador and raging bull in costume.   Latin and Mexican foods included paella, enchiladas and tacos.

 

JUNE 2001

Annual IFSI Retreat – Employees and board members gathered in Ocean City, Maryland, for three days to reflect on the past business year and to plan for the future.  Core Values, exemplifying the IFSI mission and vision, created in 2000, are re-examined.  Activities included a multi-ethnic feast and an entertaining showcase that featured highlights and the most humorous moments from past cultural celebrations.
